How to play
- 01One player is X, the other is O. Take turns writing your mark in an empty square.
- 02Three of your marks in a row — across, down or diagonally — wins.
- 03A full board with no line of three is a draw.
LV.01 Strategy
Play it better.
- X should start in a corner: it gives O the most ways to go wrong.
- If O doesn't answer a corner opening with the centre, X can force a win.
- Playing perfectly, both sides always draw — so swap who goes first each game.
- Bored of draws? Turn the sheet over and try Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe.
LV.02 FAQ
Tic-Tac-Toe, answered.
Q1How many boards are on the sheet?
Twelve, in a 3 × 4 layout, each with a numbered winner line.
Q2Is tic-tac-toe always a draw?
With perfect play from both sides, yes. That's what makes it a good first strategy game for kids: they can learn to never lose.
Q3What's the difference between tic-tac-toe and noughts and crosses?
None — noughts and crosses is the British name for the same game.
